Despite its unassuming location somewhere between Navy Yard on the Green Line and Eastern Market on the Blue Line, All Africa Global Media offers its interns big-time opportunities and hands-on experience.

The company operates through www.allafrica.com, an African news website comprehensively covering news from the entire continent. Over 800 stories from various African news organizations are on All Africa’s website are posted daily in French and English.

The site receives some 100 million monthly hits, according to information on the website. All Africa is frequented by numerous Capitol Hill personnel and NGO staffers to help keep current on African news.

Interns assist with the daily process of reviewing stories and ranking for newsworthiness. Then, after stories are posted for the day, interns can concentrate on projects that appeal to their personal interests. This includes research on current issues, reporting on events in DC that may be pertinent to Africa and various other aspects of website improvement and updating.

Margaret Mcelligott, an employee of All Africa and intern coordinator said, “our best interns tend to be people who are African or who have spent time in Africa. Students who have studied African politics and history extensively, or who have a background in journalism also tend to be the best fit for our internship program.”

While interns are unpaid, there are various other perks. As Mcelligott explained, these include “working with journalists who have more than 100 years of combined experience in African journalism.” She added, “we also have monthly intern lunches, where invited guests have off-the-record conversations with our interns, an invaluable opportunity to ask questions of people who are leaders in their country or field.”

Summer interns had the opportunity to meet a diverse group of influential Africans, including: South African musician, Johnny Clegg, Dr. Pearl-Alice Marsh of the House International Relations Committee, Leaders from the Africa Society of the National Summit on Africa and, New York Times columnist and author, Howard French. This internship is offered each summer, fall and spring and can be taken for credit. Interns have the option of working full-time or part-time. For more information about how to apply to the internship visit their intern page.
