From October 2003

What do you think about the Americans?
The US Army does nothing for us. They destroyed many buildings in Baghdad and don’t make security situation good. No one cares about Iraqi people. They should. They don’t care. You go to a checkpoint, and soldiers don’t understand and want to shoot you.

US companies - we’ll see good things. US companies come to do his job and not for fighting. They come to do the best for the Iraqi people. They are good for Iraqi people.

How is your standard of living?
The security situation improves day to day because the Iraqi government creates Iraqi police for the Iraqi people. These police will understand the ways of the Iraqi people. There is very little work even though there are American and Saudi companies. It is not good because we need Iraqi companies. The Iraqi people aren’t working. The companies bring Sri Lankans and other foreigners in. Why not Iraqis?

How can America improve the situation?
The security situation for all Iraqi people needs to be better. America must know the needs of the Iraqi better - they must do better than the Saddam regime. Americans come and destroy the regime and destroy the peace and then they don’t do anything to improve it. You must see my area to believe it- I don’t have a phone and the war was over 6 months ago.

What happened in the past?
Before the US government came we had a special security situation. I could stay out until 4:00 in the morning. We were not afraid of any thief. Now there is curfew and it’s dangerous to go out at night. We must be in by midnight.

Bush told everyone in the world that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and that he killed many people. Where are the chemical weapons? After war all of Iraq is under US army and government. They can check every area in Iraq. Where are the weapons? The war began because of chemical weapons. It is US responsibility now to do better than Saddam.

How do you feel about the Iraqi Governing Council?
We have a special government situation that is not good. President Bush should come to Baghdad and he see in his own eyes what is going on. He will see the soldiers dying one or two a day. He would know what happens to us each and every day. And he should stay away from his family like the soldiers he sent over here. The US soldier is here without his mother, father, sister. Someone is waiting for him at home. It is not fair for the US soldiers. He won’t feel what the soldier feels in Baghdad, Hilla, Tikrit. He will feel shamed because no one knew how the soldier feels. We all deserve better.
